Origin of Evening Dress
Evening dress is a kind of formal dress used after 8 o’clock in the evening, originating from Burgundy Palace ruled by kind person called Philip the Good. At that time, evening dress was made of gorgeous fabric(such as velvet or fur) and precious accessories and accented by girdle and petticoat, which weights a lot, but a sign of wealth and hierarchy.
The rudiment of evening dress originated from night gown in 16th century, which is different from that one in 15th century. Evening dress in 16th century mainly was made of thin fabric like silk and linen, and usually was worn in front of close friends and families because of too much nudity.
With the
development of ages, evening dress that symbolized power gradually affected
formal night activities, such as dinner and ball, which caused the night gown
to be a formal dress and became privilege of upper class society.
But now an evening dress or gown is a long flowing women’s dress usually worn to a formal affair. It ranges from tea and ballerina to full-length. Evening dresses are usually made of luxurious fabric, such as chiffon, velvet, satin, organza, etc. En evening dress can be any silhouette -sheath, mermaid, A-line or
trumpet shaped-and may have an empire or dropped waist.
